That night, Ayumi dreamed of her training. She was thirteen again, still freezing from their trip across the Briggs mountain.
"Here, kid." Her teacher tossed her a wooden stick with metal prongs on the top of it. The wood was etched with hundreds of tiny transmutation circles. It was heavy and nearly slipped from her hands when she tried to catch it.
"What am I supposed to do with this?" She whined.
"You are gonna sit here 'til I tell you you can get up. Alright? That's your lesson for today. Now sit."
She sat down the way her teacher had instructed her too before training had begun, on her knees like some kind of martial artist. She lay the stick across her lap and looked at her with big blue eyes. "That's it? This is easy."
"Yeah. Easy." Her foot shifted across the floor, onto a transmutation circle she hadn't noticed. The lawn sparkled brightly, and suddenly the grass around her had turned into stone, rigid and pointed towards her. Where she sat was the only place the transmutation hadn't affected.
"Wh-wha?!!"
"I'll see you later." Laughing, her teacher turned on her heel and headed for the house.
Ayumi watched her go, squirming. Minutes went by, and her legs were starting to get really sore. She moved a little bit, and was immediately pricked by the transmuted grass. Whimpering in pain, she carefully got to her feet and looked over at a chair close by. It was far, but close enough to jump on and get out. She'd definitely get out of this, she couldn't keep her here, it wasn't fair!
Nodding to herself, she jumped.
Ayumi flailed and screamed at the memory of landing on those sharp spikes. "NOOO!"
